Final Layouts for Magazine Cover

I have finished my magazine cover in good time as I will be away on the due date.  I have uploaded the final two.  I am going for the yellow as it is a neutral colour.  I didn't want the magazine cover to look to bland.  I need for the cover to catch that eye browsing over which magazine to buy.

So here they are:

Uni Assignment 3 - Magazine masthead and cover

Assignment 3 - Magazine masthead and cover: There are two parts to this project. The first task is to design a masthead for a new magazine called 'ME•IS•I'. It primarily targets a young market, 18-24 year old male and females. The second task is to take a photo of yourself representing how you perceive your immediate environment, maybe reflecting your likes and dislikes, your fears and aspirations. Once you have the image then work the photo into a cover of a magazine including the new masthead.

In design, it is common that you may be required to create work for a demographic that is outside of your own. Do some research here. It is your job to make your environment appealing to that age bracket - even if you feel that it may not be.

Here are the two choices.  Should I go for plain Black and White or the Blue version?

Charity Work - Life Activities Clubs Victoria

I was recently lucky when my daughter was offered some work from a charity and she was flat out busy with work and her own business asked me to step in.  I was asked to create a brochure for a bike run walk being held in October.  I am doing this work because I will be able to improve my skills in Graphic Design.

Here is the result:

If you live in Melbourne, why not go on down and participate in the event.  Open to all ages and its FREE!!

Below is a postcard I made for them as well.  I am really enjoying creating real requests, not just assessment tasks.

TAFE - Logo Design

My task:

The Scope of the creative project that you will originate is… your creative project must be a 2D graphic design and be replicated 3 times using these colour schemes and colour application techniques:

    Analogous
    Monochromatic
    Complementary

…. so that means you will produce 1 version in each colour scheme. By doing this you will be able to see the effect different colour schemes have on your ideas and learn the role that colour plays in communicating your ideas.

Above are my three versions.  Which one do you like?  And why?

Uni Assessment Task 2 - Digital Publishing and Typography

Background

There is a new restaurant opening in the city. It has based its décor and cuisine on the popular North American West Coast style diner. The food is abundant, cooked fresh and good value. It has a relaxed atmosphere, funky décor with cool colours and a minimalist feel.

The restaurant/diner is called 'g.f.e' (good food experience) and they require a logo and invitation designed and produced to promote their opening. However the invitation has to also act as a brochure promoting their unique dining experience.

This is my current idea for the logo.  If you have any ideas please let me know.

Due to budget constraints the brochure can only be printed in two colours (that's any two colours, you do not have to use black as one of the colours). So that means any photos or illustrations you find have to be restricted to a monotone or duotone image.

Day 5 of August Photo Shoot

Winter and work are keeping me indoors.  Here is today's photo.

Integrate Colour Theory and Design Processes

Uni Assessment Faces by Image

You have to design and create two sets of four faces. The first set of four faces have to be made up of images in a collage, these can be photos you've taken or pictures you've cut out of magazines, etc. Combine these in any order to make up four very different faces (head and shoulders only). The images and photos you use are not to be of faces or facial parts but rather of anything at all - what
you've got to do is bring these together into a collage representing a face.

Mine were created using silhouettes to give me a face and head shape.

Day 2 of August Photo Shoot

Today's photo is of one of my Kewpie Dolls.  I grew up with them and would get them at places like the Royal Easter Show in Sydney.  I remember one blew off its stick in the wind and I was devastated.  Lucky for me my parents got me a new one.

Here is a brief history of the doll:

Kewpie dolls and figurines are based on comic strip-like illustrations by Rose O'Neill that appeared in Ladies' Home Journal in 1909. The small dolls were extremely popular in the early twentieth century. They were first produced in Ohrdruf, a small town in Germany, then famous for its toy manufacturers. They were made out of bisque and then celluloid. In 1949, Effanbee created the first hard plastic versions.

Their name, often shortened to "Kewpies", is derived from "cupid", the Roman god of beauty and – as Eros is the Greek version of Cupid – erotic love. The early dolls, especially signed or bisque, are highly collectible and worth thousands of dollars. The time capsule at the 1939 New York World's Fair contained a Kewpie doll.

1st August 2013

The day started out really well.  I packed the camera in the car and we were off.

I went to the library and did more research on my uni assessment task, borrowed a few more books to read.  Went across the road to the newsagent to buy card board to use for assessment task as they will act as back drops for my photos.  I then went to ATM to withdraw money to pay for my ink that a friend purchased for me through her work place as it would be a saving of money.

I then went into this shop as I saw some optical lights which I thought would be cool for my next few photos.  I then visited my friend and gave her the money.  Stopped for a chat then left.  Jumped into my car, turned the key and nothing.  It did not want to start.  I double checked the car was not in park (yes I tried to start a car in park and called roadside service only to find I didn't have the car in park).  SO me and the car were towed home.  Car was dropped off at the garage and I walked home as I live in the same street.

Anyway here is my photo for the day.

Four Famous Actresses in Type Face

Following this super easy YouTube tutorial I managed to create the following:

After finishing the faces then adding the mask.  Using the brushes I created with their names, I made the brushes smaller and detailed their faces a bit more to get a clearer facial features.

TAFE Source and apply information on history of Design

Design history informs the present

The brief:

Assessment Task 1:

Produce a research report and presentation on your investigations on 4 individual design innovators from a range of Art and Design movements.

Investigations on individual design innovators could be conducted on the basis of the following criteria:

WHO - is/was the designer/design company?
WHAT – kind of items or artifacts do/did they design?
WHEN – did they design these items?
WHERE – do/did they live and/or operate their design practice?
WHY – did they design the way they did? What else was going on at the time that might have influenced the development of their design work (i.e. social, cultural, political environmental and/or other influences)?
HOW – do/did they challenge existing conventions at the time they undertook their designs?

Assessment Task 2:

Apply and generate design solutions using researched history and theory of design – create a design product influenced by the style for one of the following for each of your chosen designers that you have investigated.

Example: Designer 1: After your research report on the design innovator create a design for either (only one) a:
            brochure / flyer
            advertising poster
            business logo
            web page design

that is influenced by that designers signature style.

Example for Designer 2 – 4 the same applies.

You would place each of the designs with the content of each design innovator you have researched in the Interactive Digital Portfolio

Assessment Task 3:

Design Research Diary  - Each of the 4 designs that you have created based on you selected ‘design innovators’ has to be accompanied by a Design Research Diary that will log and reflect the systematic organisation of the researched material for easy access to the information and for its application into a practice. This includes the use of websites (URLs), diagrams, charts, files, scrapbooks, diaries, mind maps, sketches and illustrations – The Design Research Diary can just be a text document listing websites and other online resources you have visited placed inside a folder with any images or scanned schematic designs you have drawn or developed.

I have absolutely no idea if I did correctly.  But I have it my best.

GRP103 Assessment 3 Task Feedback

I received awesome feedback from my lecturer.  Here it is:

"Carolyn, you should be very proud of yourself. This assignment displays how much you have learned and improved over the course of this unit. Your final poster is a highly finessed piece. The layout, typography, original imagery, background, use of colour and concept are all excellent. You respond excellently to feedback and have referenced your work excellently (I am searching for another word but I keep coming back to excellent!). Your overall blog is thorough, your writing is clear and well presented. Excellent (there it is again) job. Very very well done. "

30/35 possible marks
